Superintendent
Mr. Raul J. Trevino
Superintendent
Mr. Raul Javier Trevino first came to Rio Hondo ISD back in 2015 as the Rio Hondo Junior High Principal. Most recently, Mr. Trevino served Rio Hondo ISD as the Assistant Superintendent of Academics for four years (2018 - 2022) followed by four months as the Interim Superintendent until he was formally selected by the school board as the RHISD Superintendent in October of 2022.
After completing four years in the USARMY Military Intelligence, Mr. Trevino was Honorably Retired as a disabled veteran and chose to continue his service to others as a high school English teacher at Los Fresnos High School. Thereafter, he became an ELA teacher at Berta Cabaza Middle in San Benito CISD where he was honored as the San Benito CISD Secondary “Teacher of the Year” in 1997. Mr. Trevino later became a middle school Dean of Instruction in Brownsville ISD followed by his selection as the Director of Human Resources for Los Fresnos CISD in 2002.
In 2003, Mr. Trevino became the Principal of Las Yescas Elementary and turned around the campus from being the lowest performing of ten elementary campuses in the district to becoming the highest performing campus in three short years. Then as a middle school principal in Santa Rosa ISD from 2006-10, he continued his work as a “turn around” principal at a historically low performing middle school to achieve a “Recognized” rating along with 11 Gold Performance Acknowledgements. After completing another year as a middle school principal in Rio Hondo ISD, he was then selected to join the Superintendent's cabinet in San Benito CISD to supervise 18 campuses as the Executive Director for Leadership & Performance during which time the district realized great gains.
Mr. Trevino then returned to Rio Hondo ISD as the Assistant Superintendent of Academics and worked collaboratively with district leaders to develop and implement a District Improvement Plan that would take RHISD from being the lowest performing school district in Region One to achieving a B overall rating as well as an A rating in School Progress after only one year. Despite the learning challenges faced with COVID-19, the District maintained a pre-pandemic overall District rating of a B, maintained an A rating in School Progress, and exited the middle school from school improvement status. During this time, RHHS P-TECH became distinguished as a model P-TECH campus by T.E.A. and has been continuously highlighted at state-wide and regional conferences. As a result of these Academic initiatives, RHISD made unprecedented history with the Class of 2023 by graduating 7 seniors with an Associate's Degree in Multi-Disciplinary Studies through a partnership with Texas Southmost College for the first time ever. Currently, RHHS P-TECH is on track to more than double that number with 16 seniors graduating with an Associate's Degree from the the Class of 2024!
Mr. Trevino holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from The University of Texas Pan American, a Master of Education Degree from the University of Texas at Brownsville and certifications in: Secondary English, Secondary History, Mid-Management Administrator, and Superintendent. Mr. Trevino is married to his beautiful wife of 33 years, Elizabeth, who is a 2nd grade teacher in San Benito CISD. Together, they have a daughter, Sarah (Jesse) and grandson, Seth Jacob as well as a son, Isaac (Gwyneth) and granddaughter, Ariella Joy, and grandson, Leon Elijah. Mr. Trevino and his wife are members of Abundant Life Church in Harlingen where Mr. Trevino serves as a member of the Board of Trustees and teaches Sunday School.
Mr. Trevino is grateful to God for the opportunity to serve RHISD as the Superintendent of Schools and is eager to work collaboratively with the school board and staff members to realize the district's vision to achieve "academic excellence and success" for all students.
